How do I start classes at the Kent Yoga Center?
Just show up! Most classes are drop-in classes - you can start anytime without notifying us first. Some classes, like Yoga Fundamentals or Pilates, may require your advance registration. See the class description for whether you need to sign up in advance. Classes are generally not held on major holidays and often not on holiday weekends (Labor Day, etc.) If in doubt, check the website home page to make sure your class will be held.
What should I bring to class?
Yourself, of course! Everything else is optional. We have mats, blocks, straps, blankets and bolsters for your use. Most students bring their own mats (a little more sanitary) and most have a favorite cottony or wool blanket or firm cushion they bring from home. Please feel welcome to use our props until you find ones that suit you. We have props for sale as well.
What should I wear to class?
Start with comfort. Wear stretchy clothes with comfortable waistbands and good coverage. Please dress modestly. That said, unless it is really warm plan to wear layers - a tee-shirt, tank top or long sleeved light shirt under a sweater or sweatshirt. Please do not wear shorts unless it is really warm or your internal temperature runs hot. You will remove your shoes so wear warm socks when the weather is cold.
Which class is best for me?
First figure out which classes you could attend, given your schedule. If you are a beginner you might attend a Gentle, Gentle/Moderate or Moderate class first. Gentle and Gentle/Moderate classes are generally accessible to everyone. If you are in pretty good shape physically and do not have mobility issues, you could try a Moderate class. The truth is that there are new people starting up all the time in all of the classes so feel welcome to try any class to see if it is a good fit. Should I come early to the first class?
That is a good idea. Come 10-15 minutes early to complete a registration and health history form, to meet the teacher, and to get oriented. The teacher may want to discuss your health history form with you privately. Make sure you let the teacher know if you have a chronic health problem, a recent injury or if you are pregnant. Teachers sometimes arrive just a few minutes before class time so please wait if you are early and the door is not yet open.
How do I pay for classes?
We have different systems for different teachers. Margot's classes are by donation. Suggested donation is $5-10. All of the other teachers have systems where you can purchase "packages" of classes. Heidi's single classes cost $10. You can purchase 5/$45, 10/$85 or if you are a senior age 60+ or a full-time student 5/$40, 10/$75. Special considerations may be made for low income or financial distress. Please talk with the teacher. The center accepts cash or checks. Write checks to: Kent Yoga. Passes can be shared among family members or use one to bring a friend!
What should I expect to do in class?
First of all you will be asked to take care of yourself and to listen to your body's signals. The teacher gives suggestions (not orders) and often offers choices. Please honor your own limits. We do expect you to participate as fully as possible but you can chose to sit something out or do a modified posture. Our teachers have been trained in therapeutic yoga and can often make suggestions that can help gradually open, heal or prevent further injury to compromised areas. Expect body and breath awareness guidance, breath/body warm-ups, yoga asanas (postures), and then a deep relaxation period at the end. Many classes begin with a relaxation, too. Most classes are scheduled for 75-90 minutes, although a few are 60 min. and our challenging class is 120 min. If you are a few minutes late, please center yourself before joining the activity. Classes involve lying down on the floor, seated on the floor (with props), and standing. Finally, expect to enjoy the class!
